Ask the title says. I have a brother-in-law in advanced stages of cancer going to treatment so he's thin and weak. Still wants to go deer hunting. All the redneck buddies cuz he wants to shoot a 22-250 will heavy bullets I don't totally disagree but the shoot 70s or up x 1 1/8 twist. I've got the gun I can borrow. He's very stubborn and wants to buy it not depend on anybody I get that. I telling me not to buy a 6.5 Grendel. But none of the redneck buddies heard of such thing. So what do you say light recoil 22-250 with 70s 65 Grendel with 120s or thereabouts

First off, well wishes for him. My vote is for the Grendel. I think it is an extremely versatile and efficient cartridge. Hopefully he gets better and is shooting a 338 WM in no time. Get in the woods and kick that cancer in the balls!

I’d say either should work, but I’ve had several kills with the Grendel and they’ve been impressive. Whitetail deer, all under 75 yards, dead on spot or within a few steps. My 9 yo killed his first deer a couple weekends ago with a Grendel. Ran about 20 yards and tipped over. All one shot kills with the Federal Fusion 120 gr load

Very very negligible recoil

Either can work & Grendel gets my vote. Grendel bolt action has been my go to deer rifle 4 years and running now. I am a CZ 527 fan Howa, seems to have a stronger following due to price more than anything IMHO. I am a fairly good sized guy yet I never cared for recoil much I will have no problem admiting. I would be a bit surprised if the grendel did not come in a quit a bit lighter than the 22 - 250.

only because I have one and not the other.....

I'd go with a 22.250... heck, even a 223 will easily drop a deer and will even give less recoil...

ammo for both of these is readily available on the shelves....

the Grendal, not so much unless you have a Sportsman's Warehouse near you...

Best wishes for him.

If the 22-250 will shoot a 60 grain Partition he will not be disappointed. It kills way out of its league.

A bud and I used these for a couple years and if the deer even made tracks after the shot it was very few. Most were DRT, some made 10 yards or so.

Do recall 1 doe going maybe 100 yards that was hit too far back and barely caught the liver but she bled like crazy the whole way.

Also a mature buck that went 40, maybe 50 yards plowing dirt w his nose the whole way.

Here is a 22-250 loaded w 60 grain Partition buck. Probably somewhere around the 250# live weight.

Maybe a 15 yard shot through both shoulders.

either, 22-250 is a hell of a deer gun, but the 6.5 grendel is a great one as well

Thanks for your post. I have a Grendel that I hope to take a deer with in the next couple of weeks. I currently have it zeroed with 123 grain SST's, but I also have a couple of boxes of the Fusion load as well.

You need to listen to your brother-in-law. It is important that he feels in control of decisions in his life. The difference between two calibers is small in comparison. Fighting cancer is the toughest battle anyone will ever fight.

I'm sorry about your brother in law's cancer. I lost my mom to it and it's a horrible disease, my best wishes for a cure for him.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass but I can't understand what you're saying, maybe it was written on a phone but it's illegible. Are you saying you've got a 22-250 he can borrow but he would rather buy a 6.5 Grendel? Either will do the job with the right bullet but if I was going to buy a rifle I'd pick the 6.5 Grendel, I'm not a big fan of 22's for deer though they certainly will work under the right conditions.

Yes talk to text from a phone. Done it went right to bed didn't proofread sorry about that. In a nutshell I was asked about a 22-250 he could use. I've got one with 1/8 twist Barrel more than happy to let him use it. But he wants to buy one not borrow one. If he was going to buy a new rifle for such a purpose of low recoil deer killer I recommend a 6-5 Grendel I was just getting opinions. Thank you everybody for your opinion

The Grendel is just fine especially when used with the 125 grain Nosler Partition bullet. The 22-250 is also fine if you can use a bullet that will hold together every time at every angle. Expanding Solids are the best in it, but the twist rate must be correct too. Most 22-250s have 1-14 twist barrels. Some have 1-12s, and you can buy them with 1-10 and 1-9 also. If firing a 70 grain Barnes or something similar you are better off with the faster twist barrels.

If the 22-250 has a twist rate fast enough to fire the heavier bullets well, the 22 will shoot MUCH flatter then the Grendel. If that is an advantage is strictly up to the shooter and the area he hunts in. It's not ever going to hurt him even if it doesn't help him however.

The advantage of the Grendel over the 22-250 is the fact it works in an AR15. Again that may not matter to the shooter you are speaking about.
I have a friend from Nevada that hunts with me every year, and has for nearly 30 years now. For the last 4 he has brought out his AR15 in 6.5 Grendel and I also have owned one and killed deer and antelope with it. Between Randy and I the count is now 29 animals killed with the 6.5Gs. All were OK, but some shots were not as dramatic as those I had years ago with the 22-250. If I were faced with the choice of a fast twist 22-250 or a 6.5G with both being bolt actions, I would likely go with the 22-250.
But if the 6.5 was an AR and the 22-250 was a bolt action I might opt for the 6.5 because the AR is such a good rifle for other uses too.

First off best wishes for your brother in law!!!

He has advanced stages of cancer

He wants to hunt with a 22/250

Why are we having this conversation???

Good bullets properly placed always work, but not everyone knows what good bullets are, or can reliably place them in the field
