Anyone getting 2900 fps and accuracy with the Nosler 160 grain accubond in their pet 280 Remington? If so, curious to know more about your rifle and load that takes you there. thanks in advance.

162 grn Hornady ELDX 280 AI Kimber Montana Whoa! That's into top end 7 mag territory according to Hornady's manual.

Powders like MagPro and some others will get 2900+ fps with a 150's in a .270 Win, I'd imagine you could get close to that with a .280 and 160's.

In my experience it's pretty easy to get 2900 with 160's in the .280, with several powders. Anything of about the burn-rate of H4831 will do it, even in a 22" barrel.

Chrony brand chronograph makes reading suspect, may read 2900 or less on a different day. run it over an oehler or even a pro chrono for reliable results. 2900 fps may be doable with something like RL 26, but without verification on a reliable chrono bet on false readings OR pressure in excess of 70000 psi to reach pictured results.

Dogger,
My 280 (700 KS /24" barrel) with the 160 AB doesn't quite make 2900. With 54grains of IMR4831 and a 210M primer, I'm eking out 2840 - certainly not standing on the gas but that produces the best accuracy.

2850 fps or so is standard in a non AI 280 rem. This sim is at 62K psi

I shot out two 280's before I changed to something more available commercially.
In a 22" barrel, 2875 is about all there is with 160's in a 280. NOTE: R26 wasn't around when I was doing this. Neither was R25.
I built two test rifles in 280 which were turned into 280 Ackley's. I wanted to compare the two using the same barrels. My loads were tested by a guy who developed the data for Speer's manual. At the same pressures the AI's gained about 40 fps over the 280's. The standard 280's fed thru the magazines much better which I valued more than the 40 fps.
A lot of 280 data is pretty wimpy and a lot of 280 AI data is pretty optimistic.

I have a 'tactical' custom 700 in 280. I shoot berger 168 hunting VLDs at 2800 with H1000. I know I could go higher, but its very accurate there.

I get 2950 fps with that bullet in my 280 Ackley with a stiff load of Ramshot Magnum.

Rick,
Yeah, the powder room of the .280 AI isn't increased very much over the standard .280. My calculations indicate a possible gain due to powder room of about 50 fps, very similar to the 40 fps you cite.
The big difference between the SAAMI .280 and .280 AI is pressure. The .280's maximum average pressure is 60,000 PSI, due to it originally being chambered in the Remington 740 and 760, along with bolt-actions. The .280 AI's SAAMI MAP is 65,000 PSI, which adds a lot more to the velocity than the small increase in powder room.
As I hinted at earlier, with the standard .280 loaded to 65,000 PSI it's pretty easy to get 2900 with 160-grain bullets--or at least most 160-grain bullets--especially from a 24-inch barrel. The .280 has a small but definite velocity advantage over the .270 Winchester, due to its larger bore, and Hodgdon's .270 data from a 24" barrel shows 2843 fps for the 160-grain Partition at 59,800 PSI.
The Partition is one of the bullets that produce more pressure than most, probably due to the obturation of the rear core sealing the bore a little more. AccuBonds result in less pressure, due to a shorter bearing surface.
The last test I ran of a .280 was in a 24-inch barreled Sako A7, and with published data got these results: 156 Norma Oryx, 55.0 Alliant 4000 MR, 2956 fps 160 Sierra GameKing, 61.5 Magpro, 2994 fps 168 Berger VLD, Norma MRP2, 2924 fps.
Would be pretty confident of getting 2900 with the 160 AccuBond, even in a 22-inch barrel.

Great info. Seems like RL26 would work just as great in the 280 as it would in the 270 with the 150's..

John, Totally agree with your data. Actually, I believe the 280's performance is slightly better than the 270. The 270's great advantage is that it is readily available everywhere that has big game to be hunted. Funny, I recall that your first modern custom was a 280. That was a nice rifle. I will wager that nothing you have used since is a big jump in performance on anything in NA or for African plains game.

Always liked the 280 Remington but it was hard to find in left hand rifles so I went to other rounds, still would like to try one or maybe a Tikka in 7x64. Two of my friends hunt with the 280 Rem so I have gotten to do a bit of loading with it, one uses 160 gr Partitions and the other the 175 gr Grand Slam.
Judging from all the posts here about RL 26 and the 270 Win, it should be equally good in the 280 with 160's and heavier especially.
Gerry.

162 grn Hornady ELDX 280 AI Kimber Montana Yeah.... but the 162 Amax/ELD goes faster than 160 Accubonds... less bearing surface... Still pretty cool though! That's right there with my 7 WSM/162's.
The CENTER will hold.
