i have enjoy many cartridges over the years and 30-06 is the king but now at 69 years of age with bad shoulders that both have had surgery even the 30-06 is no longer fun to shoot ,i am very close switching to a 257 Roberts to hunt with and on the bench i am really enjoying shooting my 6 BR . but if i draw a bear tag this year i will use the King the 30-06 cartridge in my PRE-64 Winchester model 70 its not fancy but this old rifle with the old 30-06 cartridge will still get the job done and most likely with 1 shot too , with an old bullet a 30 caliber Nosler Partition 180 gr. and a old used resized 30-06 brass case.

30-06 is the frumpy hairy-armpits and in desperate need of a bikini wax cousin to the sleek, sexy, impeccably groomed sweetheart supermodel 270Win. The 30-06 is like that really hot chick with a fat momma and a grandma with a beard, no good will come from it long term.
On paper the 30-06 is a fine round and pretty near anything I've ever done with a rifle could've been done well with a 30-06, but I can't do it.
Proud to say I've NEVER carried a 30-06 in the field!

In my originial reply, I didn't mention that when I asked my co-workers what rifle to buy, they said that the only hunters that used that .300 Win were the city dudes from Denver. My favorite elk rifle now is my .300 Weatherby.
As for the .270 Win, I have one that I won at a shoot at our gun club one year. I agree that it's a great cartridge and I worked up a sub-moa load for it, but I've never taken it hunting.
i have been keeping an eye on these post and i have to say i am going to turn my man card in if i ever have to ever sight in a 300 win. mag or a 300 Weatherby mag. again, i still sale guns but no more bigger magnums my shoulders and neck don`t care for these bigger cartridges anymore.these days a 30-06 is getting nasty too not sure how Mule Deer handles these bigger cartridges and he does many groups too with each rifle cartridges .
Killed lots of elk with old -06, never lost one. If people are not using proper bullet and don't place it in proper kill zone of course it would be unimpressive just like any other caliber.
I like an 06 have several shot lots of game with them but I never took and elk with mine. Until my late wife took over the 7 mag. she killed antelope, deer, elk and one moose with ours. Worked fine. But there are times I want my .300's. They will never be sold. As far as recoil, doesn't seem to bother me. I have only been shooting them for over 50 years maybe that is coming down the road, but they will never leave my safe. Too many memories.
My only time with 30-06 was I believe about 30yrs ago when I was quite young and only on two critters. It worked well from what I remember. Anyway awhile back I picked one up because I wanted to have my 308win 270win and 30-06 as they're common fare and easy to come by ammo and components. Honestly another influence was JB's info about his 200gr Nosler use in more timbered locations and it's the same region I'm in.

Pete-, I’m right with you on this. When I was young, it was a “so many cartridges, too little time” attitude. Now I’m happy for a good rifle in one of the standard cartridges.

I didn't own a centerfire rifle until I moved to Steamboat Springs, CO in the late '70s. I had killed my first elk the year before with a borrowed .30-40 Krag and wanted my own deer and elk rifle, so I asked a couple of guys that I worked with that had grown up huntint in that area what rifle I should get. They both said to get either a .270 or a .30-06. I chose a .30-06.
For about the next 10 years that .30-06 was my deer, elk, and antelope rifle, puting 8 elk into my freezer. This is the last elk that I shot with that .30-06, and it was a one shot DRT kill. None of my elk (shot with my .30-06 or anything else) were shot from a road, none were gut shot, and none had a leg blown off.
That 190 ABLR is indeed impressive. 1300 fps minimum impact velocity covers a lot of ground. If I am blessed to go Elk hunting again, I will load those up instead of the 168 TTSX, maybe.
