I have a Ruger M77 in 6mm Rem for which I�m going to being loading. My goal is to enjoy the hobby, and shoot �em at the range, at 100 & 200 yds. So, strictly for accuracy w/out concern for dropping �hogs, �dogs, or deer� If you were me, how would you start the process of trying to find the sweet spot for my gun, with these ingredients? What would be your guess at the best powder/bullet combination? Any input would be very much appreciated.

Here how the pantry is stocked so far:
Primers - Winchester & Magtech lg rfl
Brass - Remington & a few Win.
Powder � H4831, Varget, IMR4064 (& H4350 if a trade goes through or IMR4350 if not)
Bullets (about 15 of each, from bulletsamples.com)
- Sierra 60gr ballistic tip
- Sierra 70gr bt matchking
- Hornady 75gr v-max
- Nosler 80gr ballistic tip
- Sierra 85gr spt varminter
- Nosler 95gr ballistic tip

My brother's 6mm shoots the 85 grain Sierra boat tail hollow point game king well. It also shot great with Varget. Then I tried IMR 4350 with the 243's and his 6mm and got another 100 fps so we went with it.

I use 4064 in mine, with the 75 and 80 grain bullet weights..

my favorite two bullets are the 80 grain Ballistic Tip and the 75 grain Hornady HP...

don't know why I have never tried the 70 grain ballistic tip, probably because I have had such good luck with the 75 grain Hornady HP...

they V Max in 75 grain never did anything better than the 75 grain HP, and the HP is cheaper.. so I stay with it...

the 87 grain Hornadys are also some accurate bullets for WAAAAY out there...

funny, I have used the bullet weights from 75 to 90 grains, and then I jump to the 105s, 107s and 115 grain bullets with my 6mm Rem....

the 95 and 100 grain bullets get shot in the 243s....

my two powders of choice are 4064 and H 414...

RL 19 does fantastic though with the 115s, at 3250 fps out of a 24 inch barrel...

mine is on a long action and is throated out for bullet OAL to be able to be magazine length in a Model 700..

I have not done extensive test with my Rem 788 6mm but it does shoot the V-max 75 grain bullet very well with Win cases, Fed 210 primers and 42.0 grains of AA4064 for about 3380 fps.

I had a 6mm that loved Speer 85 gr BT and IMR 4895. It did well with the Sierra's of that weight but the Speer's were better. Given what you have on hand, I'd try the 4064 and the Sierra 85 grainers.

IMR 4350 worked well in it too.

Thanks for all the input so far, everyone. Any of you w/ a Nosler or Hornady manual that wouldn't mind sharing the 6mm Rem min/max loads from either of those books for H4831, Varget, IMR4350 & IMR 4064?... just for, say, the 70 to 85 gr range?... (If I can repay w/ info for you from my Speers#14, just let me know.)

My two 6mms shot best with 44.5 grains of IMR4350 under a 87-grain Hornady SP. This load hasn't been in the Hornady Manuals since Number 4, but it was listed as max then.

Lukester: I have had two factory Varminters in caliber 6mm Remington and another custom Varminter in 6mm Remington Ackley Improved that just love the Nosler 70 grain Ballistic Tips!
This bullet shoots exceptionally well in many other 24 caliber Varminters I own, including a 6mm PPC, a 6mm Remington Bench Rest, a 6x47, 243 Winchester's, a 240 Weatherby and also in the previously mentioned 6mm Remingtons and my 6mm Remington Ackley Improved!
I do hope you can obtain and try some of these wonderfully accurate bullets as well as the others you have to try.

I would not over look the powder called IMR-4320! It was the one powder that made my 700 REM BDL heavy barrel shoot very very small groups. I used Sierra 85 grain BT bullets back then. The rifle had never shot under a 1 inch group before using this powder bullet combination. I later was able to shoot .325 MOA with that rifle and it would shoot .500 any day, come rain, snow, sleet or sunshine.

I shot the barrels out of several of the exact same rifles in the early 80's on chucks and p. dogs.

Using Win brass always, and Fed 210, the load of 38.5-38.7g of H4895 with a Sierra 85g BTHP always shot fantastic groups at 200. You will have to tweek the seating depth for what the rifle will like.

I also shot several truck loads of crows with a load of 49.0-50.0g of Win 760 with the 60g Sierra Hp right at 4000 fps. This is a great coyote load also. This load shot groups in the area of around .300-.375 in my guns.

There are a couple of powders and loads that are the mack daddy of all loads that I have ever shot in the 6 Rem. One is with a really stout load of R#19 achieving 3600 fps out of a 26" barrel with the Sierra 80g Blitz. With the extreme velocity of this load along with extreme accuracy, 400 yards is a chip shot.

Also, I shot an over max book load of IMR 4064 with the 80g Sierra at 3500 fps, Win brass with Fed 210 primers that shot with all the bullets touching at 100 yards. I clobbered a lot of coyotes with this load.

Win 760, H414, and AA2700 also produced fantastic accuracy with the 70g Nosler and Speer TNT, with all these loads achieving their their best accuracy at about 1.0g below the Max load for that particular rifle.
