Gonna build a short barreled 9.3x62 and hang a suppressor on it.

What reamers are folks preferring to use? Reason I ask is that a few years back, Dave Manson made me a 35 Whelen reamer with shorter freebore and slightly tighter throat than SAAMI.

Not sure there is a huge advantage over a SAAMI reamer, but I get the same pressures with a grain or two less of powder than my other Whelens and it bumps some of the weaker factory ammo up to the speeds you'd get with handloads.

Reason I ask is that factory 9.3x62 ammo seems to be loaded fairly slow (might be that my old Husky Mauser has a super long throat), so I was considering calling Manson again to maybe make a 9.3x62 reamer with a slightly shorter freebore.

But if the JGS seems to be working for folks, I'll hit the easy button and go that route.

I had a 35W chamber cut with a SAAMI reamer. It had a very long throat and a very “generous” neck diameter. I would have been happier with a more modern throat which is 1.5 degree into the lands and a tighter neck diameter.

The 9.3’s usually use the original specs which have a very long throat. Don’t know about neck diameter. But they have a reputation for shooting well. If you use an action with a 3.6” box then I would use the original and seat the bullets out.

Many here will tell you to just stick with the old dimensions. I am undecided.

Manson (or one of the guys who works for him) did this 35W reamer with a tighter neck diameter and about half the normal freebore.

It shoots great, not sure it's any more accurate than my SAAMI rifles when they are at their best, but I don't have the powder compression issues I used to have. I get slightly flattened primers with every factory round I've tried in it, velocities are high but not over book max.

Spoke with Manson and JGS today. JGS no longer stocks 9.3x62 reamers... you can buy will either the standard one or a modified one from them for the same price. Manson stocks the SAAMI/CIP reamer but having looked at the print (I guess SAMMI/CIP is a 1.28" throat?)... I think I'll make one with a shorter throat.

A while back Thunderbeast made me some 35 cal Ultra 7's and I've got a Silencerco 36M.

If you call Thunderbeast and talk to the shop foreman about it, they may make you one. If you're interested I would definitely recommend calling them. They make a 338 Lapua can but it's heavy. My 35 cal ultras weigh 10.5 oz, they'll pass a .419 plug gauge the whole way through.

The 36M is nice. It is a bit heavier but it is also quieter. Unfortunately I have had some consistent accuracy issues with it on 3 different rifles now...a 35 Whelen, 358 Win, and 338 WM. Those issues go away when I put the thunder beasts on. Haven't gotten around to sending it back.

Thanks for the info, i have a 358 win, 358 norma, and a 358 wsm in the making so a 35 caliber would be nice and the usual suspects didn't have one the last i checked.

I think Kevin Weaver has a shorter throated 9.3x62 reamer. Might be worth a call to him.

He did a 9.3 for a member here that turned out nice. Much shorter throat than my JES rebore. Not sure his shoots any better than mine, but it is a shorter throat.

I have a PTG Finishing reamer 9.3x62 #116407. I do not know how short the throat is, but you are more than welcome to borrow it. I used it once on my Husqvarna. And Bobby Beutel at McBrides has used it once as well on a customers rifle.

Shoots pretty well with factory PPU. Better/stronger with handloads.

Thanks folks. Kevin Weaver's reamer is apparently SAAMI/CIP. I picked up a PTG reamer from Redneck, will measure the throat on it to see if it's different.

How short a barrel will you go ?

Did 20" on both suppressed Whelens for total of 27" barrel length with the suppressor attached. Long but I'm sort of used to it. Rifles that will take a 5" suppressor get a 22" barrel.

I will probably cut my Rem 700 Whelen down again, maybe to 18", just to see the velocity drop from 20" and see how it handles.

I had a 20" barreled CZ 550 Medium FS in 9.3x62. with moly tumbled 250 gr X bullets I worked up a max book load that chronographed 2600 fps using Rl 15.
It was quite a lively load.
I was living and working in an area with a very dense brown bear population . I got the rifle to use for deer hunting there. It was a nice light little rifle that was very powerful for it's size.
Wish I still had that rifle. I have a 375 Whelen Ackley Improved now to do similar but it's built on a military 98 Mauser so I don't go above 2550 with the 250 gr TTSX that I tumble in HBN.
It's a nice caribou rifle. And moose ect. It has a 19" Harry McGowan barrel on it.

My 35W had a 20.5” barrel. Before that it was 22” which I preferred. It found a new home because I couldn’t live with the long & sloppy throat.
Now I use a 375 H&H with a 22” barrel. Wish I had started with it.

That sort of reinforces my thinking on the Whelen as well. The throat on the 35W reamer Manson made is .001 over bullet diameter and freebore is about .125.

I just reacquired a 375 H&H...it seems like a different experience, recoil wise, from the Whelen and the 9.3.

That's about what I'm looking to do as well in the 9.3. I've gotten pretty close to that from a 20" Whelen using MR-2000. It's a handful in a light rifle but the muzzle blast isn't too bad.

I'd want a reamer that realized a no-turn 338-06 chamber,twisted 10" and throated for a 250 Skinner Smooch. Hint..............
