I can't think of anything else it would be, but I don't speak real fluent spanish, and the spanish I do speak isn't "Spanish" spanish, it's more spoken, like in Arizona, New Mexico, Mexico type spanish.

Most Spanish words that were originally spelled with an initial x now begin with a j. (I suspect that they're words that originated in old, old Mexico, not in Spain.) Was jabalì (wild boar) originally xabalì? Was jaca (pony) originally xaca? Was jirafa (giraffe) originally xirafa? Beats me! (Have Kirta ask the teacher! Bet that'll be one question that she won't expect! )

A lot of words that begin in "x" in Mexican Spanish come from the indigenous Indian languages. Names of plants and animals are common examples. I don't know about "x" in European Spanish. Perhaps Penny (Mrs. Barak) could shed some light. Paul
