looking for a nice economic scope for my daughters .308. I am looking at Bushnell Prime 3-9x40 or Vortex cossfire ii 3-9x40. Both specifications are the same, both made in china, both priced the same. Which one has better glass and which would suit her better for a nice hunting scope?

I honestly think you would be better served with a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40. Actually priced lower than both of those most places. Maybe on backorder but still available. I just ordered one from Doug and SWFA has the backorder option up. $159 shipped.

i do like Burris optics! However both above mentioned scopes have illuminated floating dot reticle in the crosshairs and trying to keep with something similar to that.

Gotcha. I do wish I could get the Burris with illumination.

Go with the Bushnell Prime, 19x is more better.

Buy a used Burris 3 X 9 or used Vortex Viper 3 X 9.

I wish the Burris and/or viper has the reticle I want.

Nikko sterling has a great looking scope 3-9x40 on a 30mm tube but never heard of the brand before

Burris FFII, Leupold Freedom, Redfield Revolution are my first picks in that price range. She will like the easy to find eye box of the Leupold and Redfield.

Neither of your choices. For a modestly priced scope, I would find a Burris Fullfield II or a Sightron S-II.

I only buy optics I can look through. In person. Then I buy them from my local stocking dealer because I want them to be there so I can keep local resources. It usually costs more.

If you have a good shop ( a real gun store that stocks and will mount the rings and scope) go look through some glass. Take your daughter shopping. Make it a learning experience teach her about optics and mounts, eye relief, clarity, paralax offset, loctite, zero, etc. You can also teach her a lesson about who to do business with and what levels of service, quality and features (how to decide who to talk too and what to buy) and price is not the end all moving forward in life.

I got my sons a scoped 22 rifle and handed it to them all set up. When I got their big game rifles I took them to the shop and at lunch afterward we talked and they both said they learned alot. We started hunters safety class the following week.

I have a range of stuff and cost definately is not always better but usually is. Bushnells can be sleepers especially for the money. Good luck.

I love that idea of going to a local gun store. I do not have many options to do that and the 3 places i usually go are either sold out or picked over.

I did buy a Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40 with firedot. i doubled my budget but hope its worth it

Both are pretty low end scopes but, if you don't dial it or beat it up too bad, either will probably be OK for the intended use, both with lifetime warranties, so it will get fixed if it breaks, but no telling what the repair times might be.

But for the money, the Burris FFII is hard to beat if you can live w/o the illumination.

Of the two you mentioned I would take the vortex, not a fan of Bushnell

I bought a athlon talos for one of my rifles and it is a very clear nice looking scope. Bought it through one of Doug's flyers. Think it was somewhere around $160 and it was a 4-14 illuminated.
