News said the average American family has had a $4000 or so increase in their annual cost of living this year. I was making a transfer to my online savings account tonight and looked back over the history. I was saving on average $1700 a month more last year than I am this year. We've had no increase in income but it looks like we've spent $1700 a month more this year on gas, food, insurance, taxes, medical, etc. We have no mortgage or car payments so it's purely cost of living. The inflation stats are way understated.
Looking through the bills we spend 2.5 times more for gas and our food bill has doubled since last year. Property taxes and insurance are also wsy up but I just switched insurance to get it back down. We've had a buffer the last few years and have been able to save.
I can't imagine how rough it is for those that didn't have a buffer right now. The Marxist left loves the word sustainable. This inflation is not sustainable. I hope those on a tight budget realize that and vote the Marxist out. Inflation is a tax.

Well, you just need to make more money. Go get a better job, it's that simple. Work 90 hours a week. Learn a marketable skill. No excuse, you commie whiner.

Thanks for posting that. I have a large family and 3 business I operate. It’s hard to pin down true costs. But I will say money flows out of my account at a rate that makes my head hurt. The truth is inflation has been a problem since about 2014. I call the Great Recession years (08-2013) the Goldilocks year, because I spend pretty much whatever I wanted to. Since then my discretionary spending keeps getting squeezed. Fortunaly assets prices have more than made up the difference. If not for that it would be a massive hole to dig out. Which is what your average person is dealing with.

No idea. We have very few fixed expenses, in a very good place. I keep waiting for the crash. '07 was sparked by gas prices sucking the $1.298 most credit junkies had left over every month. This is worse. My guess many are using plastic to get by now. That is only going to make the reckoning worse
10 years ago a financial advisor ask us what we needed per month to cover day to day expenses. When we told him he laughed, " I know you parents, I believe you. But let's add a few hundred for our calculations."
Then he told us he often hears numbers in the $5-8k region. Spending money per month? No vacation, no repair, new fridge... "How damn many people bring home $8k/month to spend? Sure making $100k isn't big, but clearing it is pretty darn big. Especially if you are saving and investing.

We ain't broke, but we are sure bent all to hell! 😖
We were doing....uuhhmm...okay. Then, our health insurance went from $499/mo to $800/mo. We dropped it. Health insurance is now $400/mo cash stuck in an envelope marked "Med" in the gun safe.
With Biden-flation, we have to budget to the penny! Discretionary funds are almost non existent. Every trip and need are scheduled to burn as little fuel as possible. A small cottage industry keeps us with a few bucks along each week.
Last COLA was, IIRC, 8.7%. Inflation at the time was over 11%. Left us -2% increase...decrease?

I haven't carried any debt since 2009.
Living expenses under Trump was under 1500 a month... groceries, fuel, phone/internet/TV, electricity, water/sewer, property taxes, insurances.
Now it's over 2000 a month.
Add discretionary spending.

My wife just went to the grocery store.
Last week it was $270, for the two of us!
I can't figure out WTF is going on, I guess she is slowly hoarding food and random chit in anticipation of the end of times but damn, seems ridiculously expensive.

The inflation stats are way understated. It certainly is. Yep, it is. It's a tax that most cannot perceive, but it definitely transfers wealth from regular folks over to the elite and government class by the modality of currency printing.

The real pain hasn't even begun yet. Actually it might not be a bad thing,, but then again it'll likely be more people heading to the welfare office until we see a full-on economic crash. $50 bill won't buy a double cheese-burger at Wendys, >it's coming

It's called inflation. Your money is worth less, because they keep printing it.
Don't worry, this isn't nothing, in 5yrs we're probably going to be to Zimbabwe level...
It's a calculated plan to ruin the dollar and usher in a world currency.

It's a calculated plan to ruin the dollar and usher in a world currency. Particularly if we lose world reserve currency status.

I've always been content with a pretty modest life style, and saving has been natural. It's been harder the last couple of years. Living rural, fuel and vehicles are a pretty big part of the budget. I'm somewhat protected from food inflation because we buy beef and pigs on the hoof and have a big garden on the farm, but try and buy eggs or cream at the store..... Of course, it's a bit easier to make a buck too, but those of us living rural are taking a much bigger hit that the urban centers. https://dailyyonder.com/analysis-in...-rougher-on-rural-households/2022/07/18/

Can't let the wife go grocery shopping, It'd be double. Grocery shopping itself isn't just a weekly deal it's over the long haul. Online digital coupons, bulk buying when on sale, canned food goes on super sale Thanksgiving, I buy yearly supplies then, Meat during Christmas, cut and package 50 ribeye/new york steaks for the year. Baking goods during those holidays.
Perishable items are still weekly... eggs, dairy, produce, snacks, some meat... gotta hunt the deals or pay the price. It's a game to see how low you can go.
Wife just throws chit in the cart regardless if we already have it in the pantries, or what price it is.
