Having the advantage of living on a great smallmouth fishery,”Long Lake”. I run a 7wt 8’6 7wt line. Pop flies and streamers are a deadly setup for the bronze backs.

I found smallmouth fishing at two different lakes. Rock structure and boat docks were ideal both places. Depending on wave direction I would just drift a black or dark fuzzy fly pattern up to the edge and underneath the dock. Usually got a hit every cast.
I used that experience to teach my grandkids. Not necessarily with a flyrod for a while. Light spinning tackle works well also
