Mike Horstman is definitely the best they have on MOUNTAIN MEN of The History Channel.
Phil Shoemaker's son has shown up there too, as bush pilot to fly Mike around on Kodiak.

The same production company that did our documentary, also produced “Mountain Men.” The commonality of the mountain men was they all had a beard. That is the only real qualification for the series.

One look at Eustice and you will see all you need to to determine how phony that series is…

The picture of the rifle barrel with the electrical tape on it, is common among Alaskans. They will wrap the barrel several times with tape and then use the tape to cover the muzzle against water and debris.

It is a small tape dispenser…

Love this crusty old timer.
His boat is to die for !

Certainly makes for a good sound bite. As much as I like the utilitarian get it done efficiency of the 375 H&H, I would take one of my 338-06's or 416 Rem.

The barreled action is definitely light, so is the scope,
but about the stock I do not know.
Weatherbyesque Monte Carlo butt and grip with flat-bottomed and flat-sided, long, fat forearm might turn it into a medium-weight rifle.

Honestly, I think that rifle is ugly. Certainly not to my taste. A rattle can treatment would do it a lot of good.

And it's a fuggin 375, why the muzzle brake?

Heck, there's a famous 458 in AK that has more curbside appeal. grin

I call BS.
Meat-hunting team Martha Tansy and her pubertal daughter Elli are stars of Mountain Men and neither has a beard.

Of course, everyone reading here knows about taping your muzzle
to prevent obstruction of barrel whether by snow, mud, or dirt dauber, etc.
The point of the illustration is that the tape can disguise a slimline muzzle brake,
until the rifle is fired once,
for those who are not proud of being caught with a brake on a .375 H&H.

How many wraps does it take to convince someone like you that it isn’t for disguising the muzzle brake?

No slings either for same reasons - pretty sure Bluefish has plenty of experience in the woods - just not something a local hears everyday

shrapnel,
I see you have no sense of humor.
Mike Horstman also has two separate wraps of black tape around the stock forend and barrel of his rifle.
I would have made a joke about it being a fine-tuning for proper tip pressure to improve accuracy of his bear rifle,
but figured you would not get that either.
White or fluorescent tape on the end of the barrel,
either longitudinally or circumferentially or both,
makes a passable night sight. No joke.
Jungle jaguar hunters and Alaska bear guides of note have been known to do that.
Wraps of tape around the scope tube is also a good place to spool your tape. No joke.

BTW, Elli Tansy is pretty young. She might grow a beard yet, will wait and see.
The Mountain Men show is pretty sappy and scripted-like too often.
It does have some good segments that stand out if you can stay awake through the drivel.
Overall, I find it alternately both exciting and dull.
Look at the bright side of life.

You are so sure of yourself and call BS on what I said about the criteria for Mountain Men. Nathan Sterner is a producer for the Mountain Man series, he works for Warm Springs Productions and I worked with him on the Custer documentary and he told me that when they picked the stars of that show, they were looking for men with beards. How or why you want to call BS needs to be thought out better before you make such a claim.

Where is your sense of truth?

Wow, shrapnel really is humorless, and quick on the keyboard, and thinks a little name dropping is impressive.
He posted before I was through with this edit above:

They have beardless women starring since original JOKE by the producer about casting only bearded men.
Shrapnel did not get it then, does not get it now.
BTW, that is just my sense of the TRUTH.
Heh-heh-heh.

Mountain Men is heavily directed. Marty Meiotto is a complete beast(He is right about 60 years old and can bench 350lbs at 180lbs bodyweight) but they would often portray him as a weak frozen popsickle with frosted glasses always on the cusp of death by exposure. I am pretty sure that Marty is tough enough that he could go out of his place in Pleasant Valley right now in -5F in a t-shirt and jeans and dig a snowcave, make a brushbreak, or just siwash under a spruce tree and survive the night on just doing sets of pushups and making a fire out of the soggy crap that is on the ground and the stuff in his pockets. I am sure that Horstman is like that too. His outfit looks very much like lets git chit done and not worry about the nuances of every aspect of his weapon. Everybody is just a little bit different in their tastes. One legendary master guide that is one of my mentors uses a Remington KS in 416 Rem. This is a guy who went through the Lassen Community College Gunsmithing School and Caltech in Mechanical Engineering for his BA. He owns many planes and a fishing and hunting lodge in Bristol Bay. He could 'smith a perfect mauser with a Echol's Legend and probably knows the Echols 52 move trick with a lyman peep. He uses that Remington because it happened along and it did the job exactly right.

Marty Meierotto was 2012 to 2019, and he was occasionally spotted without a beard, heh-heh-heh.
It seems the strongest move on from the series, have better things to do with their time,
or it just gets old pretending to be a popsicle for the director.
Sort of like MainerinAK, a member here,
he only lasted 2 seasons on LIFE BELOW ZERO: THE NEXT GENERATION.
Too competent to play popsicle.
Mike Horstman might be the next.
He has only been on the show since 2018, Season 7, so there is hope he will put up with it a few years more.

The worst part of that show is the idiot who thinks you can chase away Pumas and they won't come back.
He also drags around an AR when 94 Trapper carbine would do anything he needs done.

That is probably just for the Greenies, I bet he shoots the "Puma's".

Eustace is an interesting character. North Carolina has it's share of hicks.
