Just picked up one of these in excellent condition. Bright and clear optics with crisp adjustments, am wondering if it's tough enough to use on a 338 Winn Mag?
Total weight would be a tad over nine pounds with the scope and mounts.
Anyone used one of these on a rifle of similar recoil?

I wouldn’t try it. Mule Deer says scope failures go up dramatically once you get to the .300 Win. Your Lyman may last a while, but IMO, why throw a nice classic optic to the wolves like that when you could enjoy it for years on something less “lively”. I had an 8x long ago and far away, and miss the scope as much as the nice Sako it was on.
What fresh Hell is this?

Agreed. Its a nice vintage optic, but I would not put it on a heavy recoil rifle since its fairly big as 6x scopes go. I had mine on a .270 Win which better suited the scope.

I put an old Redfield frontier 4x on a 375 H&H, it's holding ip so far after about 80 or 90 rounds.

Only one way to find out....
FWIW, in the 1980s (?) Lyman made those A!l-American Permacenter scopes into the silhouette "SL" line in 6x, 8x and I think 10x (all with AO and target turrents). Not many failure reports of them from heavy silhouette competition use. Granted they were mounted on heavy barrel 308 Win and 7-08 rifles but they held up well ( I have a Lyman 8x AO scope with turrents. I.did mount it on a heavy barreled 300 Win mag for about 100 shots, and it worked fine. Sold the rifle, kept the scope.
The weak point of these scopes is that they do not have one-piece tubes. The front objective bell is screwed on the tube ( very fine threads). Don't hit the front bell too hard, and it will be ok.

I have one as well and while I can't speak for its durability I can speak for it's relatively short eye relief. While the recoil of a 270 might not be enough to damage the scope, it might be enough to cut you with the ocular. Just a caution...
