I picked up a Marlin 25MN in 22 WMR tonight from a local guy on a local board who bought it from someone but never fired it. He's tying to fund a 22 Nosler so he let it go. "JM" stamped and supposedly 1998 vintage. The gun doesn't have a scratch or mark on it, no marks on the clip where it feeds shells, I really don't think the gun was ever fired. If it was, not very much. I have a Bushnell 3X9 scope for it that I took off a Savage Axis, but I have to get some rings for it then get to the range with it once the weather is a little better.

Nice find.. I had one and it was super accurate.. I have the 17hmr and my mag is a CZ.. I like the 17, but when I am shooting varmints, I see a difference the the thump between the 17 and .22 mag..

Good find, these gun shoot excellent, I picked up a very nice 1973 Mossberg 640K in 22 Mag for $100.00 last week, what a steal. Been seeing a lot of 22 mags on the market, guess it's because of hard to find shells or the price of them. I myself like loading a 223 with blue dot and a 45grs hornet bullet, I run them at 2400fps.

Marlin makes 4-round magazines for their 17HMR and 22MRF that don't protrude very far below the stock, making them more comfortable to carry that when the 7-round magazines are installed.
If your rifle was made in 1998, the first two digits of the serial number would be "02". 2000 - 02 = 1998.

I have a few Marlin .22 Magnums, an 882VSS, 2 of the 982S, and an XT-22MR. The XT-22MR is the same as your rifle, but without checkering, and the 982S is the stainless/synthetic version of your rifle.

I finished up the Marlin this morning, mounted the scope after finding some Weaver rings and gave it a thorough cleaning. I don't believe the gun was ever fired as cleaning the bore of a used rifle with Shooters Choice I have always been able to get a patch to come out at least light blue from copper fouling. Not this gun, patches came out brownish, more like cosmoline. The scope I had, was a take off from an Axis that I put an Elite 3200 on, so thus far I have $218 into the gun (gun & rings) that's 1998 vintage and I do believe unfired, I think I did ok.

Nice rig! I have it's twin and it's a ball of fun. Mine has always been accurate, but even more so after free float, bedding, and trigger job. I once shot it in a RF match and took 1st in the amateur class.
Killed a few pigs with it as well.
Your's may be different, but mine and a few other bud's that have them all preferred either the CCI Maxi Mag 40g HP or RN or the 50g Federal HPs. All of those were the copper plated pills. For some reason the jacketed ammo didn't shoot near as well for us. May have something to do with the MG, not sure. My bud's Savage with std groove bbl does well with jacketed ammo.
Good luck with the new rig.

The first gun I ever shot. 20 years later, the first gun I ever saw blow up, due to faulty ammo. Luckily the good folks at marlin got it up and running again.

You got a good rifle at a great price. I've had good luck with 2 Marlin 922M semi autos, but just upgraded, (maybe maybe not huh) to a Magnum Research semi auto. Hard to beat the Marlin truth be told. Especially for the money you got into it!
