Found a post 64 heavy varmint model they only made for a couple years. Somewhere around 1995. I believe the serial # started with 212xxxx. We've talked about this model on occasion. It is chambered in 308 winchester and has the stainless barrel and blued receiver. I almost bought it, but I had already bought a rifle at a different shop yesterday, they were willing to go down to $600.00. Rifle is in good shape, but a little dirty. Could be cleaned up to look like new. I believe these had Wilson barrels and kevlar stocks made by HS precision. Correct me if I'm wrong, only going off of memory. Have any of you seen one of these recently? I don't see them too often. Also, for those that do have them, how do they shoot?

I have had a few of these Model 70 HV and still have two (308 1/12" twist & 223 1/9" twist). 26" Wilson & HS Precision stocks.

Precision Shooting magazine had some articles in the mid-90s using these as basis for "High Power XTC match rifle on budget". Many I see have been drilled and tapped for match sights etc.

Every one that I have seen shot sub-MOA, and were not fussy about load.

In my opinion the $600 you saw is a great price

Thanks Tim. I appreciate the info. I remember shooting with a guy at the range and he had one. The funny thing is he had bought it from a guy on a PNW site. I recognized the rifle and asked about it. It drove tacks. I’m thinking about going and looking at this one again. I’m in the area, but I know it will probably go home with me!!!! I have an extra nightforce in the box too. Uggghhh

I have one of these chambered in .308 that I dropped in a McMillian A3G. $600 sounds cheap. It's at the back of a safe somewhere. I'm recalling the options for setting these up to use detachable mags weren't plentiful or cheap.

From memory, which might not be spot on, there were a couple different variations. One was supposed to have Wilson bbls and the other not. Maybe "HV Varmint" vs "Heavy Varmint".

Now, that is a sweet rifle. The fluted barrel is aftermarket? I'll bet that is a tack driver..

That's the factory barrel.

The ones I've seen didn't have fluted barrels. Do you know what is stamped on the barrel?? Maybe stealthgoat knows the difference between the 2??? Fluted vs. non fluted heavy barrel varmint..

Well, I didn't get it today. I forgot the dang shop is closed on Mondays. I did pick up my odd ball rifle though. Speaking of drilled and tapped for target sights. Sorry, it's a Remington. The damn thing caught my eye when I was buying my Mauser a couple weeks ago!!!!!!

Remington 788 30-30..with target sights and Canjar trigger..

They made em in fluted, maybe even just 1 year.
