A friend of mine has an early 552 that has a fail to fire issue. If the round is manually chambered, it fires and ejects. The next round is chambered, but when the trigger is pulled on the second round there is only a light strike on the case. What could the issue be? It appears to me that something is binding and slowing down the firing pin, but I have not figured out what.

Sounds like it needs a good cleaning. These rifles get pretty dirty and should be stripped and cleaned inside at least once a year if they are used much.

I will tear it down today and scrub it good. My friend is in his upper 70s and his eyes are failing him. He and his brother tried taking it down to clean it and broke the bottom cover. At that point he called me to put it back together, but I have no knowledge of that rifle. This is the first I have seen in at least 25 years.

Thanks guys!

The 552 was a fairly decent 22 auto-loader in its day.. I had the cousin; the 572 which is just the pump-action version.

They're not difficult to take apart, just pay attention to that mainspring under the barrel and control it when removing.

The trigger groups comes out as a unit and is easy to clean, lube and put back in.. I'll bet the most fouling is going to be on the bolt, the breech and in the chamber..

You won't have any problems cleaning it I'll bet..

Update. Tommy had cleaned the rifle pretty well, but somehow the disconnector was not in the correct position. After cleaning the gun again, just to remove any doubt, it still would not fire the second round. I downloaded a user manual off the Remington site and while studying the diagram I noticed the disconnector was not in the correct position. A quick flick of the disconnector and now she is running smooth. Thanks for the ideas guys.
