Just looking for information about the ammo the 24/47 and the M48 sights were set up to shoot. I'm currently just shooting my handloads. They're soft shooting starting loads with a 200gr Speer Bullet. I found I needed to set the rifle to 800meters to hit at 600 yards. It could just be because my loads are so slow, or it might be set up for the "S" cartridge. Light ball. Or both!

Interest in the Yugo Mausers is so low that basically the only information I routinely see is "they have no collector value, but they're good shooters". Hoping someone can clear this up. Thanks!

I have a few hundred rounds of Yugo surplus 8x57 ammo. It's all 196 grain FMJ, loaded (IMO) fairly hot.

My guess is you will shoot closer to the sights with a faster load.

Thanks! I'm also just recalling I was actually using the HDY 150 interlocks at only 2400, not much better than .30-30. I ran some numbers on the HDY Calculator and indeed, the 200gr Speer bullet would cut 40" of drop at the same velocity.

Man I remember that Yugo 8mm. I shot 1800 rounds of that stuff one summer. I really got to where I could shoot one of those Mausers. It was cheap! At one point I think I calculated it at around $.08 a round.

But yeah, 196 grain at around 2,500 fps if I remember correctly.

I had some Turkish stuff too and my lord was it hot! It would impact nearly a foot higher than the Yugo stuff and chrono’ed at over 3,000 fps if I remember correctly.

The Turkish stuff is famous for breaking rifles. I dont care to shoot corrosive ammo anyway. I scored ~550 of what I think is Egyptian 8mm for cheap. I pulled all the bullet, sorted the powder by headstamp and year, and I've been shooting it all in reloadable brass with a 10% reduced load. The thing is by far my favorite rifle to shoot.

This is the rifle in question:
