Back in Late May we stayed around the 10-11 mile marker. Had 4 good runs, and ended up with a 9.5 sand tiger. Action was slow for the week that we were there.

I been surf fishing up that way quite a bit. Not recently. I fished the Cape , Oregon Inlet, Frisco and Kitty Hawk.
One day fishing the cape it was pretty stirred up. I caught shark after shark. Then all of a sudden we started catching big red drum. That went on for about 2 hrs then it was back to sharks. Lots of fun.

Going down next Friday for 3 nights with the wife looking at some houses. Hopefully do a little surf fishing in the mornings. Heading down last week of Oct, with a group of 12 guys, do nothing but fish and drink.
Sharks I’ve caught always seemed to be at night, Seen guys take bait way out with a kayak couple years ago in Frisco in the fall.

I’m using Penn squall 15’s with braid, 5/0 circle hook, 2’-3’ leader and big chunks of mullet.

I land up to 6 footers using large spinning reels casting from the beach. U need a large high quality high line capacity reel. Shimano Thunnis 16000f are what I use with 30-50 pound braid. When I have to cast farther to get past the breakers I go with the lighter line. 2 foot wire leader, then 4 foot 200 pound mono, then a 15 foot section of 100 pnd braid shock leader for casting and landing.
I prefer live bait. 5-8 inch fish hooked through the upper lip/nostril. Crabs are less likely to ruin a live bait.
Large circle hook and have at it. Check the NC regs for hook requirements. They had a major update on yhose.

Hour before dark get ready. Have caught mid day but rarely. Landed a 5 footer on a bluefish rig a few weeks ago with 20 pnd braid and one of my smaller Thunnis 6000f. Drag recieved a hard workout. Make sure your drag is in good shape and updated. Mine all have newer carbon fiber washers and are well maintained. Sharks make hard long runs on lighter tackle.

Rods, whatever quality rod that will chunk the weight you plan on chunking. I use 12-10 foot penns.
